Seeking to recreate the quaint and cozy atmosphere found in the beloved cafés scattered throughout the arrondissements of Paris, Maxime and Julien opened the doors of Au Comptoir in Vancouver’s friendly Kitsilano neighbourhood in 2014. Since then, the restaurant has garnered a reputation for showcasing the same attention to detail, authentic design and bistro fare for which Paris is known, cultivating a loyal following of regular visitors in the process, and earning them gold medals for Best Design and Best Casual French, respectively, at the 2015 and ’16 Vancouver Magazine Restaurant Awards.
The centerpiece of Maxime and Julien’s vision for their quintessential neighbourhood café was, of course, the counter, for which they solicited the work of Ateliers-Nectoux, a third-generation Paris-based company renowned for its handcrafted 1930s-style pewter bar tops. When paired with its signature Paris-by-way-of-West-Coast style of service and classic cuisine, Au Comptoir offers a warm and inviting atmosphere that pays homage to the very best of Parisian café culture — whether at the counter or the table.
